CCMP Exam 2026: What Changed with the New Format (And What Didn’t)

If you’ve heard that the CCMP exam changed on April 1st, 2026 and you’re not sure what that means for your preparation, here’s the short answer: the exam structure itself didn’t change. It’s still 150 multiple choice questions, still 3 hours, still the same application process you’ve already read about.

What changed is the Standard it’s based on. As of April 1st, the CCMP exam now uses the 2nd Edition of the ACMP Standard for Change Management, and here’s the good news: the 2nd Edition is genuinely better for people who are studying. The flow is more intuitive, a number of inconsistencies from the first edition have been cleaned up, and the overall structure aligns more cohesively from section to section. If you’re starting your prep now, you’re actually in a good position.

This article walks through exactly what changed, what stayed the same, and what you need to do based on where you are in your preparation, whether you’re starting fresh or already mid-study.

First, the Good News: Here’s Everything that Didn’t Change

Before diving into what’s new, it’s worth being clear about what the April 1st update did not touch, because there’s been more confusion about this than there needs to be.

The exam itself is structurally identical:

  • 150 multiple choice questions
  • 4 answer options per question
  • 3-hour time limit
  • Online (proctored) or in-person at a Kryterion test centre, your choice
  • Same application and eligibility requirements (hours of experience, training, essays)
  • Same PDU renewal structure and fees

And if you already hold your CCMP, you don’t need to do anything. Passing under the 1st Edition is not invalidated by the 2nd Edition. As long as you continue completing your PDUs and renewing on schedule, your designation remains fully valid. There is no requirement to rewrite the exam.

The only things that changed are what candidates sitting the exam from April 1st, 2026 onward are tested on, specifically the 2nd Edition of the Standard, and how the questions are distributed across the content areas.

Why did ACMP update the Standard after a decade?

The original Standard for Change Management had been in place since 2014. After ten years, ACMP undertook a formal Job Task Analysis process, surveying change practitioners globally to check that what the Standard contains actually reflects the real-world experience of people working in the field. Where it didn’t, updates were made.

The result is a framework that remains methodology-neutral and applicable across industries, but is better calibrated to how change management is genuinely practiced today. ACMP has been clear that the goal was a seamless transition for candidates, not a reinvention of the discipline.

CCMP exam Version 1 vs Version 2: What Actually Changed

Rather than reproducing the full breakdown here, we’ve covered the changes in detail across two dedicated articles. If you want a quick overview of what’s new, What’s Changed in the ACMP Standard Version 2 walks through the key updates at a high level. If you’re mid-study and want a line-by-line comparison of every change between the two versions, ACMP Standard Version 2 Detailed Change Log has you covered.

Reading at least the high-level summary before sitting the exam is worthwhile, even if the changes feel minor at first glance. Understanding the shifts in structure will help you avoid second-guessing yourself on exam day.

Is the New CCMP Exam Harder?

The short answer is no. The exam is not harder, but it is continuing to move in a more scenario-based direction. One candidate who sat the exam in April 2026 estimated that around 65% of the questions they encountered were scenario-based, which is worth keeping in mind as you structure your study approach.

That said, the improved flow of the 2nd Edition actually works in your favour here. Because the Standard is more cohesive and internally consistent, the exam feels like a similar difficulty level to before, if not slightly easier. As before, for most questions, you can comfortably eliminate two of the four answer options fairly quickly. The real work is in evaluating the remaining two to identify the best answer, which is exactly the kind of thinking that scenario-based practice questions will help you build.

The most important thing you can do to set yourself up for success is to make sure you are studying from the 2nd Edition of the Standard, not the 1st. This matters most for questions related to inputs and outputs, and for questions covering the new process groups, where the two editions differ enough that studying the wrong version could cost you marks.

Practicing with questions that closely mirror the real exam format is one of the most effective ways to build that evaluative thinking. Chuck Bergeron, a recent CCMP, put it this way:

“Thank you so much because I have to tell you that your question prep was truest to form on what I saw in the actual test. I had been using a lot of tools but practicing with your workbook was immensely helpful!”

If you’re looking for practice materials built specifically around the 2nd Edition, our study bundle includes over 1,300 questions aligned to the updated Standard, along with 6 full-length practice exams, plus workbooks, flashcards and interactive learning games.

Which situation are you in? Here’s exactly what to do.

Scenario A: You were Mid-study on Version 1 Materials

The good news is that your existing knowledge base is not wasted. Read through the high-level summary of changes linked in Section 3, then focus your additional study on the updated process group order and the inputs and outputs. Pay particular attention to Process Group 5.1 and make sure you have a solid understanding of the new subprocess groups introduced in the 2nd Edition. If you were close to ready under the 1st Edition, this is likely only a few hours of targeted re-study rather than starting over.

Scenario B: You’ve Taken (and not passed) the 1st Edition Exam

Just like Scenario A, you’re in a good spot. The pivot to the 2nd Edition is not that big. It is more intuitive than the 1st Edition. Use the tips above to understand what has changed and rest assured that you have a very solid base from your prior learning.

Scenario C: You are Starting Fresh Today

You are in a great position. Everything is in place for the 2nd Edition exam and it is running smoothly. There is nothing unusual about sitting the exam right now, it is the same experience as before, just referenced against the new Standard. Study from the 2nd Edition from the start, practice with materials aligned to the updated content, and you are good to go. Our study bundle has everything you need to set yourself up for success.

How to Prepare for the New CCMP Exam: a Version 2 Study Framework

Start with the Source Document

Everything on the exam traces back to the 2nd Edition of the Standard, so that is where your study should begin. Download it directly from the ACMP website to make sure you are working from the correct version. If you prefer to learn by listening, we also offer a free audio recording of the Standard on Spotify, which is a great way to absorb the material during a commute or workout.

Build your Rote Memorization Base First

It might be tempting to jump straight into scenario-based practice questions, but the scenarios require a solid core of rote memorization to answer effectively. Knowing the process groups, subprocess groups, inputs, and outputs fluently is what allows you to evaluate scenario questions confidently rather than guessing. Get that foundation in place before you move to applied practice. ACMP tests specific language and you need a firm grasp of the exact wording they use throughout the Standard.

Practice with Questions that Mirror the Real Exam

Once your foundation is solid, scenario-based practice is where preparation really accelerates. Our study bundle includes over 1,300 questions aligned to the 2nd Edition, full-length practice exams, workbooks, flashcards, and a four-phase study schedule to take you from start to exam-ready in a structured way.

Benchmark your readiness before you book

Aim for 80% on your first attempt through a set of practice questions before sitting the real exam. If you are revisiting questions you have already seen, you should be hitting 85% or higher. That gap between first-attempt and repeat performance is a reliable indicator of how well the material has actually landed.

Time Management on Exam Day

Most anglophone candidates complete the exam in around 1.5 hours. Use the flag-for-review function to mark questions you want to revisit rather than lingering on them the first time through.
