CCMP Exam FAQs

When you’re studying for the Certified Change Management Professional designation, you’ve probably got some questions.

Here are the most common ones that you’ve asked us, and the ones we found ourselves asking.

Got a question you wish was answered? Pop over to our contact page and let us know.

What is the CCMP Exam Pass Rate?

Well, it’s annoying, but this is not a number the ACMP shares with the rest of us. Our anecdotal evidence here at Change Management Study Hall shows a 60-75% pass rate. This is one of the reasons we’ve created study materials to help set yourself up for success.

What is the CCMP Exam Passing Grade?

Alas, another question where the answer is kept under wraps. We wish we could answer this one for you!

What is the format of the CCMP Exam?

It is a closed-book, 150 multiple-choice question exam. It’s done online at home with very specific requirements, or at a Kryterion testing center.

Can I apply for the CCMP Exam or complete the application with a hard copy application?

No, the application process is completed via the ACMP website. They strongly recommend writing your application experience and essay questions using a word processor first, to be able to easily edit and review for grammar, as well as have a friend or colleague review it prior to submission.

How far in advance should I apply for the CCMP Exam?

We strongly recommend completing your application two months before you plan to sit the exam. The ACMP requires time to process your application and exams must be scheduled a month in advance. That gives you 60 days to study (ahem, that aligns with our study approach! How wonderful.)

Is it possible to apply for the CCMP without being an ACMP member?

Yup, it sure is! There is a lower fee for taking the exam, though, if you are already a member. Once you pass, you need to become an ACMP member in order to hold the credential, though.

I have the experience requirements for the CCMP but am currently unemployed. Am I eligible?

You sure are! Getting your designation is a great way to bolster your resume and make yourself stand out to recruiters, over others who have training but do not have the designation.

What is the difficulty level of the CCMP exam?

This is a fairly difficult exam, however that is due to the content not being aligned with the change management training that most people undertake. It is an overarching methodology, which they label “method neutral” and doesn’t exactly match Prosci or Kotter, for example. Thus, there is a need to memorize specific inputs and outputs, plus the Code of Ethics. It’s very doable, but does require effort!

Is the Standard for Change Management and ACMP Change Management Code of Ethics PDF sufficient to pass the CCMP exam?

As long as you have the training hours, then technically yes, it is. However, we created Change Management Study Hall because of the lack of study resources out there. We found there wasn’t much to assist with studying. So… we think the PDF is not sufficient and we have created things to help you pass.

What percentage score on sample exams indicates readiness for the real CCMP exam?

There’s not a right answer to the question, but we believe you should be getting 80% on practice questions, on the “first attempt” of a set of questions. If you are revisiting CCMP practice questions, you should be getting 95%. Yes… that’s a high score, but that’s how you can be prepped to pass the real exam on your first shot. Study study!

Where can I find resources to prepare for the CCMP exam?

Here, of course! Here is the list of all known (to us) CCMP study resources. If you know of more, we’d love to add them to the list!

How often are CCMP exams conducted?

The CCMP doesn’t have fixed exam dates, unlike many designations. You do, however, have to schedule either with a test center or with the ACMP to take the exam online. You have one year from approval of your application to sit your exam. The ACMP strongly recommends scheduling your exam with at least 3 months remaining in your eligibility period, in case it is difficult to find a time slot that works for you and the invigilator.
Some people find it very difficult to self-start without a set deadline, which is part of why we strongly recommend you book your exam, to help you set some targets and to help you avoid procrastination. (Why? Because we’re good at procrastinating too. We know all about it.)

Can the CCMP exam be taken in a language other than English?

At this time, no. Applications and the exam must be completed in English. That said, you can download and read the standard in Arabic, Chinese, English, Farsi, German, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.
If you speak one of those languages more fluently than English, downloading both languages can be an invaluable study tool.

Uhoh. I failed. Can I take the exam again?

You can take the exam up to three times, within one year of your application to sit the exam being approved. You do, however, have to pay a fee for each re-take. This is another reason it is a good idea to schedule your exam with a few months remaining in your application eligibility period, so you do not have to pay and resubmit your application in order to re-sit the exam.

When do I find out if I passed or failed the CCMP exam?

Right away! Aren’t computers great? As soon as you have completed your exam, your pass or fail will be provided on the computer screen. They will also email you a copy of your results, to the email address you used to register for your CCMP application.

Are there bathroom breaks during the exam?

No, no breaks of any kind are permitted. You also cannot shift your body out of view of the webcam, while writing your exam. Test takers are being filmed during the exam. Here’s an article about Anne’s experience with the online exam process.

I like to read questions out loud, can I do that on the CCMP exam?

Unfortunately not, even if you are taking the exam online from home. Picture this: an exam proctor sitting in front of a million monitors, like a security guard. That person cannot determine if people are cheating, if half a dozen folks are reading out loud.

Do I need to use a calculator during the CCMP exam?

Nope. No math is required, to the relief of many. You’re not allowed smart watches, cell phones, etc. when you write the exam.

Is there any negative marking on the CCMP exam?

Nope. There’s no negative marketing on the CCMP exam.
TIP: Even if you don’t know the answer, take a guess. Do not leave any questions unanswered.

Can I bookmark a question on the CCMP exam and revisit it again?

Yes, you can. It is called “Mark this item for later review” and you can later select “Review All” which will show all of your questions and you can see which ones you marked for review. Click in to those questions to review or change your answer.

How much time is permitted for the CCMP exam?

You have 3 hours to complete the exam. A clock is available on screen, so you know how much time you have remaining. 3 hours is 1.2 minutes per question. That might not seem like much, but most people answer the questions where they are confident in the answer, in under 20 seconds. Most people have reported to us that it takes them 1.5 hours. If English is not your first language, you may find it takes you longer.

If I fail the CCMP exam, how soon can I retake it?

There is not a required waiting period, however you will need to apply for re-examination (note: not reapply for eligibility), pay the fees and rebook, so it will probably take a few business days to sort out.

Will anyone know if I fail the CCMP exam?

No. Neither pass nor fail results are shared without your express permission and, as of writing this comment, there is a $50 fee per request for ACMP to disclose your results to another entity that you have approved.

What is the acronym for change management practitioner?

CCMP = Certified Change Management Professional, a designation issued by the ACMP, the Association of Change Management Professionals.
